Season concludes with fourth place finish at state meet
On March 9, the gymnastics team did something that they have not in 37 years.
They earned the opportunity to compete in the state meet that took place on March 17 at Ball State University.
The team finished 4th in the state with a score of 108.425. The Indians gave a solid performance that had many standouts.
They would have liked to place better in the meet but felt satisfied with their performance.
“Well we wanted to come home with a metal and that’s exactly what we did. We were hoping to do better at state but it was defiantly a new experience,” junior Mackenzie Barcelli said.
Danielle Solis placed 3rd on the vault with a 9.725, 7th on floor with a 9.4 and 9th in all around with a 36.7. Barcelli placed 8th on bars and 11th in the all around. Madison Kurtz placed 11th on vault and 22nd in the all around. All of the gymnasts that placed in events will be back next year so the future is very bright for the program.
The team feels that this year was a great experience, not just in the gym but also being together as a team.
“We had a great season. The best season a gymnastics team has had at Portage in a really long time. The girls got along great and we became really good friends. We were like family at the end of the season. Honestly this gymnastics season is a the best sports season I’ve ever had at Portage,” Barcelli said.
