Monahan continues to shine

The name Nicki Monahan has echoed through the halls of Portage High School for the past three years and with an even brighter future ahead of her, the successes are likely to continue. Basketball is not just a hobby for Monahan, but a passion she plans on taking to the collegiate level in the near future. For the summer, Monahan has an intense schedule. Mondays through Thursdays consist of high school practice with games on Monday and Wednesday nights. Monahan’s Amateur Athletic Union team also practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Other events Monahan will be participating in is the Indiana All Star Game on June 6 and the Indiana All Star Classic on June 15.

From July 8 to 15, Monahan’s AAU team is planning on going to Florida to play at nationals. On July 20 she will be going to Ben Davis to play in the top 100 showcase.

“Basketball means the world to me. Basketball is pretty much my whole life. I play basketball almost every day and my life would be totally different if I didn’t play basketball,” Monahan said.

Monahan recently played in the North South All-Star game with freshman Kaitlin Doud in Portland, Ind. Only the best basketball players in the state were invited to this game with ten girls on each team.

“I thought it was great that there were two of us from Portage that got to play together. I was excited to play against new people,” Monahan said.

Monahan has won the honors of Most Valuable Player for this year’s high school team and was named to the Indiana Junior All Star Team. Her goals for senior year consist of winning a sectional and having a better record.
