4×400 relay team comes together to achieve success

It takes more than one person to be successful in a relay race, even if you are the best. This year the boys 4×400 team was ranked third in indoor track state. The group features Seniors Alvin Best and Othie Freeny, junior Jeron Blake, and sophomore David Clegg.Although the boys live different lives, they all share one common interest that has brought them together.

Freeny said that track has always been an interest to him, and he has been involved in the sport since the age of five. However, Freeny was not the only runner with a history in track.

Clegg said that his father was very talented in track, he even won MVP on the track team one in high school year.  His father’s success really caught his attention.

With years of experience the boys know exactly what to do when they go in for competitions. Freeny explains that, as basic as it sounds, the most important thing to keep in mind when running is that you have to focus on getting the baton around the track as quickly as possible.

“We are very talented and have a lot of experience, but we need to work on being disciplined and staying focused,” Freeny said.

For Clegg, the most important thing to keep in mind during a race is his teammates.

“I just think of the team and always think to myself that I can’t let them down,” Clegg said.

Even though the team has been very successful, the boys are always looking for improvements.

“The thing we need to work on the most is the warm-up before our race. Those warm-ups are a big part of the race,” Clegg said.

It is still relatively early in the season, and the boys still have a lot to look forward too.

“I’m looking forward to coming back and helping my team accomplish big things this season,” Freeny said.

The boys have been successful so far, and only time will tell what is to come in the future.

Clegg said that he is looking forward to the post season the most, and he is really looking forward to taking home the state metal.
